Putting in a full effort on any given night is the difference between an early playoff exit and a Joe Ward Memorial Trophy Championship.

Schreiber Falcons Captain Owen Keene is expecting his team to not take any shifts off as the calendar now reads 2025.

“The Lakehead Junior Hockey League is a lot closer this year with all of the teams capable of beating each other any night,” Keene said. “Our team has a lot of returning guys who know how it feels to lose and have no desire to feel that again. I hate losing more than I love winning.”

The Falcons find themselves in third place in the overall standings; three points up on the Thunder Bay Bandits and seven points back of the first place Current River Storm.

The team last played a regular season game on Saturday, November 30th when they lost 5-2 to the Storm. A pair of December dates with the Bandits and Thunder Bay Northern Hawks were post-poned until March 2nd and February 1st respectively.

Keene feels the team is bonding well, adding “some of the younger guys that have been around the team for a couple years have been able to fit in really well.”

Keene highlights the play of defenceman Liam Speziale, who has registered a goal and an assist in ten games this season.

“He’s been having a killer year. He’s dependable when we need him to be on defence, and takes his chances as well offensively,” Keene added.

The Falcons goal is to get back to the LJHL Final after falling to the Northern Hawks in six games in the 2024 league semi-final. They lost the 2023 Final to the Northern Hawks, also in six games.

The Falcons won three of five games in the month of November but were outscored 35-28.

They engage with the Nipigon Elks in a home and home series in Nipigon on Saturday, January 11th and in Schreiber on Sunday, January 12th.

The Schreiber Falcons are honoured to be on the traditional territory of the Anishinabewaki.
