“Just cause there’s a storm, that don’t mean a bird can’t fly.”

Those words came from Thunder Bay Northern Hawks Captain Jack Michaelis referencing the Current River Storm.

Heading into 2025, both teams are separated by just three points and the season series has been split 2-2.

“In my opinion, our biggest competition within the Lakehead Junior Hockey League is the Current River Storm,” Michaelis said. “The boys are hungrier and more driven than they were last year. If everybody does their part, I believe we will have no problem winning the league.”

Michaelis sits third in league scoring with fourteen goals and ten assists for twenty-four points. He was named as the Intrepid Bus Charters Player of the Month with twelve points during six October games.

Michaelis is quick though to share compliments throughout the team, adding “All the boys are bonding well, and we look to continue that throughout the break. With all the boys doing their best, it’s hard to only name one player. A lot of the guys are having a good start to the season.”

The Northern Hawks have earned a spot in the Lakehead Junior Hockey League (LJHL) final for three consecutive years and have won the Joe Ward Memorial Trophy a total of twelve times. Their last title came in 2023 against the Schreiber Falcons.

They open 2025 on Thursday, January 9th against the Thunder Bay Northern Hawks at the Tournament Centre.

The Northern Hawks are the second oldest franchise in the league with the Nipigon Elks being an original franchise since the league began play in 1993.

The Northern Hawks play their home games on the traditional territory of the Fort William First Nation, signatory to the Robinson Superior Treaty of 1850.

The Lakehead Junior Hockey League proudly acknowledges and celebrates the history, heritage, resilience, and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis across Canada. We also continue to learn and educate ourselves in the spirit of reconciliation.
